This post reviews how to optimize ChatGPT prompts in general. And, in particular, we’ll look at how to improve ChatGPT’s typing prompts. At the end, you will see a video from AI Foundations with 32 ChatGPT tricks for beginners.
ChatGPT prompts are input messages that help you chat with OpenAI’s generative AI. The better written and more detailed the prompt, the better ChatGPT will respond.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been designed to understand and respond to human queries in an engaging and contextually relevant way. But the prompt has to be equally relevant. This is where your skill comes into play and, fundamentally, the use (and usefulness) of ChatGPT comes down to your ability to write good prompts.
It takes a lot of rehearsal to learn how to guide AI to get quality answers
ChatGPT information is updated as of September 2021. It is advisable not to rely exclusively on ChatGPT for updated content, but rather to use it as a source of inspiration in the creative process without replacing the author’s voice. Also read our responsible use of AI policy .
Structure for better prompts in general
There is a structure that is recommended to generally optimize prompts. This structure is the following:
- Assigning a role to ChatGPT
- Definition of a task
- Specification of the target audience (target)
- Setting an output format
- Setting restrictions
Assigning a role to ChatGPT
This is one of the important parts, along with the context.
Examples:
- Act as a digital marketing expert
- Act like a geography teacher
- He acts as a sports coach with many years of experience.
Task definition
It is the essential part because it guides ChatGPT to produce clear and concrete text. You shouldn’t write a prompt without homework. This type of no-task prompt is sometimes called an empty prompt and can be used to start a conversation.
Examples:
- Write a 300-word essay.
- Write a blog post.
- Give me a brainstorm.
- Summarize the following text.
- Explain this text to an 8-year-old child.
- Give me a healthy recipe…
Target audience specification
If you specify who your content is aimed at, the one generating ChatGPT, the result will be clearer.
For example:
- Write a recipe to make a healthy dish with natural ingredients. My target audience is young women between 20 and 30 years old.
Output format settings
It’s not essential but it helps establish how you want ChatGPT to respond.
Examples:
- Respond with emojis.
- Respond with a table.
- Respond with a summary.
- Answer by points.
- Respond with a numbered list.
Setting restrictions
It is not essential either, but it helps ChatGPT adapt the result to a tone, language or style.
Examples:
- Use poetic language.
- Adopt a fun tone.
- Write as if you were Shakespeare.
- Respond with scientific language.
- Use a formal tone.
- Write in a humorous tone.
Improved prompt example
«He acts as a vocational teacher with many years of experience . Help me define two practical exercises to teach the impact of AI on communication . Use informal and fun language; and responds with a numbered list.
Ideas for better writing prompts
If we focus on the purpose of writing helped by ChatGPT, we have the following ideas to improve your prompts.
How to find content ideas
ChatGPT can help develop original content ideas by asking questions about specific topics in your field.
For example:
- “Act like an expert artist and tell me the main movements in painting.”
Another powerful tactic is to chat with ChatGPT to discover keywords. By asking it to give you a list of popular terms on a particular topic, you can discover topics that might interest your audience.
For example:
- «Act as a digital marketing expert. Give me some keywords related to social media.”
Formulate titles
By asking the AI for different versions of titles on a specific topic, you can get many options and select the one that best connects with your content and audience. Remember, the trick is to create a short but powerful title, packed with keywords!
For example:
- « Acts as a title generator for a blog post. The topic is […..] and the keywords are […….] . Write five headlines that attract attention. The title should be brief, preferably less than 20 words. »
Content Outlines
We can help you from ChatGPT to write outlines of articles or posts for a blog.
For example:
- “Give me an overview of the main points I should cover in a blog post about the impact of AI on communication . ”
Or a more precise structure:
- “Develop a blog post structure that includes an introduction, body, and conclusion.”
Content outlines can also be requested for article summaries.
For example:
- «Act like an expert web writer and give me the 5 key points of the following article: ‘[….]’»
- “Act as an expert web writer and write a short summary of no more than 100 words of the article ‘[…]’.”
- “Acts like an expert web writer and generates a set of actions based on this article: ‘[….]’.”
Use of hyperparameters
In How to optimize the use of ChatGPT, from the chat, knowing what hyperparameters are , it was explained what hyperparameters are and how to use them to improve prompts.
Beware of biases
Please note that large language models like ChatGPT may contain biases that can influence opinion-based responses.
For example:
- « Act as a social worker and write a personal opinion on the current state of the world of work and its potential problems .
Strategies
Writing effective prompts for ChatGPT requires clarity, conciseness, and context, balancing guidance with creative freedom.
Simulate human conversation
For example:
- « Help me write a post that captures the attention of readers, for a blog about the latest trends in social networks «.
Provide context
It is about defining the objectives well, avoiding ambiguous prompts that do not allow ChatGPT to provide impactful answers.
For example:
- « Help me write an article for beginners about the fundamentals of generative AI and its impact on communication. The article should be introductory without complex concepts. «
Use negative indications
For example:
- «Give me ideas about the key points of digital marketing. But don’t use list format in your answer, just normal paragraphs.”
Ultimately, ChatGPT writing prompts should be descriptive, concise, and similar to human conversations, but sometimes require adjustments to achieve the desired tone. ChatGPT is a writing assistant, not a replacement, so it’s important to adjust as needed.
Advanced Prompts
There are other types of prompts that will help you obtain better results.
Chained Prompts
Chained prompts consist of several prompts in series, within the same chat, with information specified in parts, clarifying, deepening and complementing questions and answers.
For example:
- Question 1: ….
- Question 2: ….
- etc.
Markdown language
By default, ChatGPT chats in plain text but can also reply in Markdown language .
Metaprompts
And how about writing a prompt to generate a prompt? This can be immensely useful in obtaining quality, highly effective responses. For example, you can use metaprompts to generate images. Trick for creating images: Generate a prompt in ChatGPT to use later in Bing Copilot.
